Happy, happy Sunday! The last month has been busy with balancing lots of time in the kitchen with time outdoors. Jeron and I did some traveling and the kids have finally been getting outside more now that it has cooled off a bit.
I’m loving all the fresh produce right now and maybe having a bit of a panic attack at the though of snow returning soon (obviously not soon, but still… too soon). I can’t keep up with all the tomatoes coming out of my garden so I’m roasting them for snacking and sandwiches all week long.
I still have a couple great summer recipe to share with you, but then we’re going to start getting into fall food! I have a few holiday dishes that I’m looking forward to putting out there, but there’s still time to get your requests in if there’s something you need a recipe for this fall. Are you starting on pumpkin yet? I never dive too deep into it, but I don’t blame you if you do!
I took a poll on Instagram to get a better feel for what you guys are looking for here, and I could not love you more. Basically you love indulgent food, bake with real sugar, and also enjoy weird-o health food ingredients. If you disagree, be sure to let me know in the comments!
Here’s what I’ve been up to…
1. Des Moines
Jeron and I went to a wedding in Des Moines and I was overwhelmed but how lovely it was! The wedding itself was one of the most intimate, thoughtful events I’ve ever been to and I felt so honored to be there. The food was fabulous, the setting was beautiful, and it was great to catch up with some old friends.
Jeron and I stayed at Hotel Renovo which was the perfect choice. It was simple, beautiful, affordable, and comfortable. We had brunch at St. Kilda before heading home and it was SO good. I ordered the huevos rancheros which was super spicy but just right.
2. Simone Biles
Where were you when you saw Simone Biles be the first person to land a double double beam dismount in competition? Or a triple double on floor?! That lady is beyond human. After watching At the Heart of Gold on HBO I have even more respect for professional gymnasts and Simone especially.
3. Fall Fashion Inspo
4. Corn, corn, corn
This weekend is my hometown festival, Kornfest. That’s right, we spell it with a K. That means a parade, games, and MINI DONUTS. Here’s some more corn that’s been catching my eye.
- Corn salad with chile and lime
- Chipotle sweet potato noodle salad with roasted corn
- Mexican street corn quinoa salad
- Charred corn and poblano black bean nachos
- Corn, tomato, and avocado chickpea salad
5. TV Time
Lots of tv talk this month! Jeron and I watched the new season of Stranger Things and couldn’t believe that it was maybe the best season yet. It’s so hard to keep making good seasons when the original season was just so good, so we were super impressed.
We also got through the new season of Orange is the New Black. I felt like it was a good ending for the show, and it was definitely time to wrap it up. Danielle Brooks is a vision.
I also binged through Years and Years surprisingly fast. It wasn’t anything like I was expecting! It’s basically This is Us meets Black Mirror, and it is SO intense. I don’t think I’ve ever been so affected by a main character death (not telling who it was!!).
Finally there was the end of The Handmaid’s Tale. This was not my favorite season, in part because I feel like they’ve removed a lot of the danger from June’s world (which is insane, because there’s still a lot of danger). With the world they’ve established I just would have expected her to be killed a long time ago for the things she’s getting away with.
We’ve also started watching the new season of GLOW, which is always more of a lighthearted good time! Bash is my spirit animal.
6. Buddha Bowl Class
I’ll be teaching a cooking class all about buddha bowls at the People’s Food Co-op in La Crosse on September 12th. If you love buddha bowls as much as me or are curious to find out what they’re all about, I hope you’ll join me! You can go here for more information on how to sign up.
