    Slice of Life #24

    Slice of Life

Yeah, so, isn’t this supposed to be a food blog? I’ve been seriously slacking on the recipe posts these last few months, but I’m hoping to turn a corner on that soon. First there was morning sickness, now there’s exhaustion, and I just haven’t had the time or stomach to be trying new things food-wise. I have actually started diving back into recipe development and hope to have something to share with you soon, but I really want to share the best quality with you instead of something I just threw together once and liked, so it takes a little time.

Speaking of food, I made this berry crisp with the kids on Monday and have been topping it with Talenti gelato (vanilla, of course). I don’t really like fruit desserts but the crumble on this is insane and with the gelato? Amazing.

I can’t remember if I’ve mentioned we have a robin’s nest on our back deck and it’s my favorite thing right now. I love watching the babies poke their hungry heads up. They’ve been getting pretty big and today I haven’t seen them popping up at all. I’m totally afraid that they jumped out and flew away without me getting to see it. I’ve been waiting weeks for that payout and now nothing! Wah.

Someone please tell me where to buy a maternity swimming suit that will fit my over-demanding specifications. As if I don’t have a hard enough time finding a normal suit I like, the maternity section is killing me. I would prefer a fitted (no tent) tankini, although I would settle for a one piece. I just can’t wear triangle tops, which it seems like EVERYTHING is, and I refuse to wear white because I worked at a pool for ten years and I just know it’s the worst idea ever. EVER. I also don’t look great in bright colors and don’t want to spend $200. Anyone know the perfect suit? Anyone??

I recently read The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. I’m a fairly messy/lazy person, but I wouldn’t say the messiest. Still, I could use some tidying and organizing. Please tell me you’ve read this book, because this lady is cray-zee, right?! Totally off her rocker. She treats her house and objects as if they are alive and empties out her purse every night so she can put it and everything in it where it “really” belongs in her house. I’m pretty sure her foolproof method just won’t work for people raising small children and those without tons of money to spend. I only say the money thing because I keep things around that don’t bring me joy, like pants that don’t fit me because I keep finding myself pregnant and changing sizes three times a year. I just don’t want to have to buy a new pair of pants every time I gain or lose five pounds. On a positive note, I’ve been throwing away crap like it’s my job and am hoping to sell some of the better stuff.

In a sudden turn of events we dropped our cable subscription. We were riding high with HBO and everything, now we’re just doing Netflix and Redbox. We really weren’t watching that much cable (with the exception of HBO, and yes, I am aware of HBO Now), so it shouldn’t be that much of a change. We are realizing how much we just used it as a time waster or background noise. The thing I actually miss the most is the little box that would display the time. I’m walking around my house not knowing what time it is and feeling like I live in the jungle when I could just buy a freaking clock (or look at my phone which is always in my pocket) and know what time it is.

We definitely waited until the day after the Mad Men finale to cancel cable. Did anyone watch it? What did you think? We love, love, loved it. Best series finale ever. It’s pretty hard to make me laugh out loud and I was absolutely dying over the Peggy/Stan phone conversation. Jeron and I were divided on the meaning of the ending, which I didn’t even think left any room for interpretation, so obviously I’m right.

Now that we’re without cable I feel like my Netflix standards have dropped. Not that we’ve been watching crap, but I would be more willing to. We started Black Mirror last night, which has always looked terrible but was recommended to us by a friend. It’s super well done and intriguing, if not uncomfortable. I’m excited to see more.

What have you been up to? Eaten anything good?

Have you looked at EQ Swimwear? I haven’t used their maternity suits, but have had luck with their regular lines.

You could do only slice of life posts, and I’d still come back. The baby bird thing I totally can relate too. After all that waiting.

And the tidying up book? I love your “review.” I have that on my library wait list because SO many bloggers rave about it, and I generally get an endorphin rush from anything involving organization. But the small kids thing is SUCH a big factor in tidyness at this stage. I hear you. Maybe I’ll lower that on my list’s priority.
