August! I’ll go ahead and be predictable and say summer is flying by. I’m simultaneously super sad that it’s going to be cold in about four weeks and super excited that we’re getting closer to getting this baby out of me!
This pregnancy has been kind of weird. When people ask me how I’m feeling I always say good, because I do feel good! Except when I don’t. My stomach has been so crazy this pregnancy with food aversions/nausea/pains/and other things you don’t need to think about. And it’s not even consistent. I’m really hoping that all clears up as soon as the baby is born because I’m completely off my beloved avocados now. That’s pretty much the saddest thing ever, but on the other hand my body has been feeling pretty great despite the 20 pound watermelon hanging out under my shirt. I have a little back pain here and there, but nothing too major. I’ve been able to get out for some nice long walks in the evening and lift some light weights a few times a week, because why shouldn’t I have rockin’ arms when the rest of me feels huge?!
A couple weeks ago we traveled to Lake City, Minnesota to have lunch with my aunt and cousin. It’s such a pretty little town, and the kids were obviously loving it in that top picture, despite the heat. On the way home we stopped at a place called Lark Toys which has pretty much every toy and book ever created for sale. They also have an awesome carousel, which the kids of course had to ride. Strummer even rode up on a moving animal and loved it despite the fear he had of the rickety carousel at the fair earlier this summer.
The birds’ nest on our back deck produced it’s THIRD round of babies recently. I didn’t even know that was possible. Having the nest there next to where we eat dinner outside every night has been the best thing this summer. The kids get to learn all about how birds have and take care of their babies (the mom and dad are practically married!!) and it provides endless entertainment. I was obsessed with getting to see the babies leave the nest this time around, and was definitely not disappointed. The kids were playing outside so I stood back there and watched while the most adventurous bird teetered on the edge like he was going to jump. I took a step closer to get a better look and must have scared him because he took off! He couldn’t quite fly yet though, so he just landed on our patio table (!) where I could gather the kids around to get a closer look. After a few minutes we let him go and I thought that was it, but later that day I saw another bird teetering on the edge and was sure to keep an eye on it from the same spot as before. Well, I turned around for one second and when I looked back the bird was flying right at my head! It totally freaked me out, I ducked, and it landed on this branch right next to Lola. We followed him around for a few minutes before letting him go as well. I love how trusting the mom and dad birds have become of us. They won’t exactly let us go near them, but they’re no longer very shy about us getting close to the nest or babies, and would still come feed them 10 feet from where we were eating dinner every night.
I’ve been diving deep into fall prep. NO, I’m not talking about pumpkin everything. A little pumpkin bread here or there is fine, but I am definitely not on the pumpkin-all-the-things bandwagon. I’m talking homeschool prep and figuring out what I’m going to wear once this baby is born because I’ve (thankfully) gotten rid of most of my “nursing” clothes. Can we talk for a quick minute about how much homeschool curriculum costs? I’m trying to piece together something that both feels like a good fit for the kids and a good fit for having a new baby around. There are so many options and there’s so much planning, it’s pretty intimidating. I’ve also been pinning layers like crazy and hope to stock up on my new favorite nursing bra, which I’m excited to tell you about in my upcoming second trimester favorites!
Only one episode of True Detective left! Last week’s episode was probably my favorite so far this season just because instead of driving around talking about people whose names I couldn’t remember they actually went out and just did something I could watch and follow. Let’s be real, I can’t follow most of what happens on that show. Like, we still don’t know who was in the bird head, right? We have about two seasons left on Nurse Jackie, which feels like a lot because season five has been soooo bad! Some real re-pilot, jump the shark ridiculousness. Hopefully it gets better again. I’m thinking about giving the new Wet, Hot American Summer a chance after that. The cast looks ridiculously good!
What have you been up to? How are you spending these last hot days of summer?
