Place ribs in a single layer on a large baking sheet. Season generously with salt and pepper. Broil on high, about 4 inches from the coils, until browned, about 15 minutes. Remove from the oven, flip the ribs over, and season the other side with salt and pepper. Return to the broiler for another 15 minutes or until fat is rendered and ribs are browned. Move the ribs to the bowl of a crock pot and cover with the barbecue sauce. Set the lid in place and cook, undisturbed, on low approximately 4 hours. Keep the ribs whole or shred off the bone, moistening with the crock pot juices as necessary.. Serve alongside mashed potatoes and cornbread or use as a filling for sandwiches.
