How to Press Tofu Without a Press

The Live-In Kitchen

Before cooking tofu, it's a good idea to press most of the water out to improve the taste and texture.

You can still press the water out even if you don't own a tofu press such as this one.

TIP

Only press tofu that is extra firm to medium firm. Do not press soft or silken tofu.

Start by removing the tofu from the package and draining any excess water

Next, slice the tofu in half like a book to create two flat sheets.

Place the tofu on a plate layered with folded paper towels or clean kitchen towels on top, bottom, and in between.

Place something heavy on top, such as a cast iron skillet with something inside it.

Use this time to prepare a marinade.

Pressing removes the packing water, while a marinade replaces it with flavor.

Let the tofu press for 10-60 minutes. The longer you press the firmer it will be.

You're now ready to cut and marinate your tofu!
