Avocado toast has been a top trend for a long time, and with good reason. Avocados are full of nutrients, healthy fats, and they taste pretty darn good if you ask me.

You guys loved my almond butter toast bar so much that I wanted to put together a more savory option using avocados! Keep reading to find all my favorite topping combos, or use this as inspiration to come up with your own.

I love setting up buffets like this for a brunch, bridal shower, or pre-holiday meal. It lets everyone get exactly what they want without needing to go through too much work.

How to serve avocados at a buffet

Avocados can quickly turn brown after being cut. Please read my post all about how to ripen avocados, where you'll also learn how to keep cut avocados green.

Serving avocados at a buffet offers a special challenge, because people may want to grab a portion over a long period of time. I would recommend waiting as long as possible to cut into your avocados before serving them.

Options for keeping avocados green at a buffet

  1. Have one person who is in charge of cutting, slicing (or mashing), and serving the avocado for each individual
  2. Pre-mash your avocados and mix with lemon juice, lime juice, or olive oil to help it stay green

If you choose to mash your avocado ahead of time, I would recommend pressing a piece of plastic wrap against the surface of the mashed avocado to help keep air out.

How many avocados to buy for an avocado toast bar

I would recommend purchasing 1-2 avocados per person attending. Most people won't eat more than one avocado, but it's good to have a few extras on hand in case some have brown spots.

What kind of bread to serve

I like offering a variety of bread options, so I went with a whole grain bread, seedy sourdough, and rice thins for gluten-free guests. Be sure to keep your toast away from the other ingredients if serving gluten-free guests.

Bagels or sweet potato toast would also be delicious options!

Topping ideas

I recommend thinking of a few of your favorite topping combos, offering ingredients for those, and letting guests make the final decision about what to put on their toast.

If you prefer a little more structure, you could pre-assemble toasts with specific toppings and arrange them like you would find at a tea or dessert buffet.

Here are a few of my favorite combos:

  • Smashed avocado, radish slices, salt, crushed red pepper flakes, olive oil, feta cheese
  • Smashed avocado, sliced tomatoes, balsamic drizzle
  • Smashed avocado, salt, fried egg, EBB seasoning
  • Garlic rub, sliced avocado, salt, pepper, lemon juice, micro greens
  • Smashed avocado, salsa, jalapeno, cilantro

Ingredients

  • 25 slices Toast, I used a combination of whole grain, sourdough, and rice thins
  • 15 Avocados
  • Sliced radishes
  • Sliced grape tomatoes
  • Sliced jalapeno
  • Garlic cloves, halved
  • Microgreens
  • Fried eggs
  • Olive oil
  • Lemon wedges
  • Balsamic drizzle
  • Salsa
  • Feta cheese
  • Coarse kosher salt
  • Crushed red pepper flakes
  • Everything but the bagel seasoning
  • Cilantro, roughly chopped

Instructions

  • Arrange ingredients in various baskets/bowls/plates. The amount you use will depend on how many people you are serving, but I recommend 1-2 avocados per person to allow for a few that might be brown when you open them up.
  • Cut and serve the avocados on demand, or mash ahead of time with a drizzle of olive oil and keep tightly covered and refrigerated until ready to serve.
  • Mix and match toppings as desired.

Notes

If using fried eggs, I recommend frying them as close to serving time as possible.
More gluten-free toast options include gluten-free bread or sweet potato toast. If serving gluten free guests, you may want to have a separate section of toppings for them, and be sure not to toast gluten-free bread in a toaster normally used for regular toast. You can always make toast under the broiler if you're worried about cross contamination.

This is great info! I'm planning on doing this for my daughter's upcoming bridal shower.... but I was hoping to see how you arrange the toppings and what sort of receptacles you put them in on the buffet.

I apologize this wasn't more clear! You can see a few of the toppings in bowls in some of the photos here. I always try to choose first whether the topping belongs in a plate or bowl, then find one that is the right size for the amount I'm putting in there. Cute little spoons, tongs, or forks are useful for keeping fingers out of the food. I would recommend setting up the buffet with plates at the start followed by bread options, avocado, and finally toppings. Depending on the size of receptacles for the toppings, you can probably stagger them and line them up 2-3 deep rather than in a straight line. Best wishes to your daughter on her marriage!
