Roasted sweet potatoes are one of my favorite ways to add a little something special to a meal.

Whenever I roast them in the oven I always end up cooking one side of each cube a little darker than the others. Since I started making sweet potato in the air fryer, every side is perfectly cooked every time!

    Air fryer sweet potatoes

This recipe is incredibly simple and easy to customize depending on how you’ll use it after cooking. You can season these any way you want.

Think chili powder and cumin for burritos, curry powder for a grain bowl, or garlic and onion powder for topping with eggs. I also think just plain salt and pepper is great, or add a drizzle of honey before serving to make them extra appealing to kids.

    Ingredients

    • Sweet potatoes
    • Olive oil
    • Salt
    • Pepper

How to make air fryer sweet potato cubes

    1. Preheat the air fryer to 400ºF.
    2. In a large bowl, toss sweet potato cubes with olive oil, salt, and pepper to taste.
    3. Add the sweet potatoes to the air fryer, working in batches as necessary so you don’t overcrowd the basket, and cook for 10-14 minutes, shaking the basket half way through.
    4. The sweet potatoes are done when they are tender and lightly browned. Cooking time will vary depending on the size of your cubes and the type of air fryer you have.

    Top tips

How to cut sweet potatoes for the air fryer

Start by rinsing your sweet potato, then peel off the skin if desired. I like a simple vegetable peeler (affiliate link) for peeling sweet potatoes.

Next, cut off both ends, then cut into ½ inch thick rounds. Cut each round into ½ inch thick sticks, then cut each stick into ½ inch cubes.

You want the cubes to all be roughly the same size so they’ll cook evenly.

    Don’t crowd the air fryer

Air fryers work by circulating hot air around the food to cook it evenly and make it crisp on all sides. Because of this, it is important not to crowd the air fryer basket. Work in batches as needed to prevent crowding.

    Shake/stir while cooking

It’s important to shake the basket or stir the sweet potato cubes half way through cooking to ensure they cook evenly. You can set a timer to remind yourself to do this.

    The best air fryer

I’ve had the Ninja Foodi for years, which has several functions including air frying and grilling. I find it works really well but is a bit bulky for a kitchen appliance.

If you prefer a more affordable appliance that only air fries, I would recommend Ninja’s 4qt Air Fryer or this Corosi Air Fryer. Keep in mind that all appliances vary, and you may need to adjust your cooking temperature or time.

How to store and reheat air fried sweet potato cubes

Keep leftovers in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. They can also be frozen for up to 3 months.

Reheat your sweet potato chunks in the microwave, oven, or air fryer to get them as crisp as they were originally. They should only need 3-4 minutes at 400ºF in the air fryer to reheat.

What to serve with air fryer sweet potatoes

    • Vegan Tofu Bowl
    • Sweet Potato Bulgur Bowl
    • BBQ Tofu
    • BBQ Tempeh
    • Vegan Ham
    • Hummus Bowls
    • Soft Scrambled Eggs
    • Creamy Mushroom Tempeh

Tips for customizing air fryer sweet potato cubes

    • Cut the sweet potato into wedges, increasing the cooking time as needed
    • Season with your favorite spice blend such as za’atar, curry powder, paprika, garlic powder, or garam masala
    • Drizzle air fried sweet potato cubes with honey or ginger tahini dressing before serving

    FAQ

Can I make this sweet potato air fryer recipe in the oven?

Yes, you can definitely make roasted sweet potatoes in the oven. Heat the oven to 425ºF, spread the sweet potato cubes on a rimmed baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil and seasonings, rubbing with your hands to coat all sides.

Cook for about 30-40 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes or so, until lightly browned on all sides and soft when pierced with a fork or knife.

Are these like air fryer sweet potato fries?

If you cut these into a fry shape or wedges they would definitely be sweet potato fries. Keep in mind that sweet potatoes don’t get super crispy in general, so any crispness you get straight out of the air fryer will start to soften as soon as they’re done cooking.
