Top tips and questions
What kind of air fryer should I buy?
I have this Shark Ninja Foodie (affiliate link) which has functions for air frying, grilling, baking, and dehydrating. It works really well, but is rather bulky for keeping around the kitchen.
If you prefer a more affordable appliance that only air fries, I would recommend Ninja’s 4qt Air Fryer. Keep in mind that all appliances may vary and you may need to adjust your cooking time.
Can I make this recipe without an air fryer?
You could certainly roast potatoes in the oven to get a similar effect. If you don’t have an air fryer, I would recommend adapting my oven roasted rosemary potatoes to suit your taste and needs.
Can I make this recipe without oil?
The great thing about the air fryer is you don’t need to use oil. I chose to use oil in this recipe because I like the flavor and the extra crisp layer it gives the potatoes.
If you prefer not to cook with oil, you can simply omit it from the recipe.
How many potatoes are in 1.5 pounds?
Potatoes are a tricky ingredient in recipes because they vary so greatly in size. I used a kitchen scale to weigh out 1.5 pounds, but it wouldn’t be a problem to guess the weight based on the weight of your package of potatoes, otherwise I would say it’s roughly 5-6 medium sized yellow yukon gold potatoes.
Cutting potatoes for home fries
I chose to peel my potatoes, but you could leave the skin on if you want to add more fiber or save some time. After peeling my potatoes, I cut them into slices about 1 inch thick, then cut them into cubes.
You’ll want to cut your potatoes into cubes that are roughly the same size so they cook evenly. Feel free to use any size potato, but you may need to adjust the cooking time if you cut your cubes very large.
How long do home fries from the air fryer stay good?
Home fries will keep in a covered container in the refrigerator for 3 days, though they are best enjoyed fresh. To reheat you can put them back in the air fryer or bake in the oven until crisp. You can also microwave them, but they will lose their crispy texture.
Tips for customizing
- Swap the yellow potatoes for red or russet potatoes
- Skip the onions and peppers, or use a different colored bell pepper and red onion
- Top with a sprinkling of chopped parsley or chives
- Adjust the seasonings to suit your tastes
- For extra crispy home fries that stay crisp longer, soak the raw potatoes in water for 15 minutes, pat dry, and proceed with the recipe
