Top tips
How to mash beans
You can mash your black beans right in the bowl with a fork or potato masher (affiliate link). I prefer to use a fork because the potato masher can get clogged with some of the beans. You don’t need to worry about mashing every single bean, just enough to open up most of the beans so they starchy insides can help hold the patties together.
How to grate carrots
Start by peeling the carrot if necessary. I use a regular vegetable peeler for this. Next, grate your carrot using the small holes of a box grater, or use a food processor with a shredding attachment. I find the box grater preferable because you can grate the carrot into very small strands.
Tips for customizing your black bean patty recipe
- Leave out the spices as a way to make a black bean patty recipe suitable for older babies (check with your doctor before feeding your baby a new food)
- Add extra chili powder or finely minced jalapeño to make extra spicy black bean burgers
- Use gluten-free bread crumbs and check your cheese and spices to make them gluten-free
- Serve on a bun topped with a mixture of salsa and sour cream, some romaine lettuce, and a few avocado slices
FAQ
Yes, I think these baked veggie patties are wonderfully healthy. They’re full of protein and fiber. Of course every one has different dietary needs, so consult your doctor to decide what is best for you.
I definitely think this homemade black bean burger is going to be healthier for you than something you would buy in the grocery store. While those are a great option to have on hand, making the burgers at home gives you complete control over the ingredients.
You can make this recipe vegan by using two flax eggs in place of the regular eggs and omitting the cheese (or using a vegan version). Keep in mind the patties may not hold together as well if making substitutions.
A black bean patty is a black bean veggie burger. In this case I’m calling it a patty instead of a burger because I prefer to eat them as a main dish rather than in a bun with burger toppings.

These look delicious! You said form them into 12 patties, but I was curious if these were 12 normal sized patties? If I’m only making these for 3 adults I’m assuming I should have the recipe then?
Thanks so much, hoping to make them for dinner tonight!
Lindsay Moe says
Yes, the recipe is very easy to halve. I usually allow 2 regular sized patties per person, so six would be perfect for 3 adults if you don’t want any leftovers. Enjoy!

Great thank you!

They look amazing! I guess I’ll offer them to my kids, they will probably eat it. They hate black bean soup or any beans.

Super awesome recipe! Very simple and extremely delicious. Thank you!! 🙂

Have you ever tried freezing them? If so, how did it turn out? Cook them first or no?
Lindsay Moe says
Yes, they freeze great! I cook them first, then you just need to reheat in the microwave, stovetop, or oven.
Savannah Blake says
Thanks! Preheating the broiler now! I added chopped onions too 😋

Your thoughts In using ground oats or cooked quinoa in place of breadcrumbs?
Lindsay Moe says
I think either of those would work just fine. Quinoa flakes (which are kind of like ground oats) might be better than cooked quinoa, which would have a lot of moisture in it.
Denise says
Made these today for supper and they were a hit. I will definitely be making these again.
Q:have you froze these before or after you cooked these? Do they freeze well?
Lindsay Moe says
Yes, they freeze great! I freeze after baking. When I want to eat it I’ll microwave it for about 30 seconds to take the chill off, then either broil as you did in the first time or pan fry it until warm and a little crisp on the outside. You could also just microwave it until hot if you don’t mind it being a little soft.

I made these and they were delicious! But is there any sub that can be made for eggs to bind them together without eggs?
Lindsay Moe says
I’m so glad you enjoy this recipe! I have a recipe for flax eggs on the site that would be perfect for this. It is a 1:1 swap for eggs. https://theliveinkitchen.com/flax-egg/

I was 3/4 of the way through a different black bean burger recipe when I read the online reviews about them being very dry. I searched for solutions and came across your page and this recipe. I added the carrots as suggested, and they were delicious. So although it was not the exact recipe above, your recipe helped save my dry black bean burgers. Thank you!
Lindsay Moe says
I’m glad it could help!
