Garlic and balsamic grape tomatoes are a savory dream. It's been one of my go-to grape tomato recipes for the last 10 years.

I shared this recipe way back in the day when I was first blogging, which means two things.

One - this recipe is legit and I've been making it forever and ever. I needed to share it with you right away because it was (and still is) one of the easiest go-to recipes that I can pull out of my pocket without even looking up the recipe.

Two - the photos were horrible. The recipe was also just typed right into the post, without the option to print or all the other fancy stuff you can do nowadays.

I wanted to share this recipe with you again because it continues to be a staple in my house, and I guarantee your family will love it just as much as mine does!

Ingredients

  • Grape tomatoes
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Garlic
  • Balsamic vinegar

How to make balsamic tomatoes

  1. In a medium skillet over medium heat, cook tomatoes, oil, and garlic until beginning to soften, stirring occasionally.
  2. Add balsamic vinegar and cook, stirring occasionally, another couple of minutes or until the vinegar begins to thicken. Serve warm.

Top tips

What to serve with balsamic tomatoes

I learned to make this recipe when I worked at a deli in college. At the deli, these tomatoes were served on what I still consider one of the best vegetarian sandwiches.

It was hummus, mozzarella, spinach, and these velvety tomatoes grilled between two sides of a kaiser roll. It's a sandwich I still make and enjoy today!

In addition to being delicious on sandwiches, these tomatoes are also great tossed with pasta, added into a salad, served over a frittata, or with creamy polenta.

How to store

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 4-5 days. Balsamic tomatoes can also be frozen in freezer-friendly ziplock bags for 3-5 months.

Tips for customizing

  • If you don't want the tomatoes splattering on your stove top, cook them in a 400º oven on a baking pan instead
  • Add fresh herbs such as basil, oregano, or thyme
  • Add red chili flakes for a spicy kick
  • Swap red grape tomatoes for multicolored grape tomatoes

FAQ

What's the difference between grape tomatoes and cherry tomatoes?

A grape tomato is shaped like a typical grape - think longer and oval, while a cherry tomato is round like a cherry!

Grape tomatoes have a thicker skin and are typically less watery and sweet than a cherry tomato.

Is this recipe healthy?

Yes, I would consider this recipe healthy because the tomatoes contain great antioxidants and nutrients.

I don't have any first hand experience with this type of bottle, but I would definitely think so! I usually just store them in plastic containers in the fridge, but certainly glass would be better.

Delicious!!... I hadn't made balsamic tomatoes in a very long time. I looked it up to see what I needed and found your recipe. I was taking dinner on the rode. This was the side dish for some white chili I made. I forgot to put in the garlic! Still delicious!!

If I'm going with the oven option, how long should I bake them? Thank you!

I'd keep an eye on them, probably 10-20 minutes depending on how soft you want them.
