If you're ready for a new, easy, zero spice way to change up your favorite Mexican recipes, it might be time to try this recipe for avocado crema.

My family is very wary of anything green, especially if it comes with a burrito (they know I love spice!). However, this easy recipe hit all the right notes.

It's incredibly creamy with just the right amount of tang from the yogurt and fresh flavor from the lime. The yogurt also makes it high in protein, which means it can help you meet your wellness goals.

Ingredients

  • Avocados
  • Plain Greek Yogurt
  • Lime juice
  • Salt
  • Garlic powder
Ingredients used to make avocado crema.

How to make avocado crema

  1. Add all ingredients to a food processor or blender and process until smooth and creamy. Taste and adjust the lime juice, salt, or garlic if desired.

Top tips

Use a blender

You just won't get this beautiful whipped, creamy texture by mashing everything with a spoon or fork. I used my nutribullet to whip this up in seconds, but you could also use a food processor or blender, especially if you're doubling or tripling the recipe.

How to ripen avocados

I always have ripe avocados ready to be eaten thanks to my no fail ripening routine. I buy my avocados while they're completely firm, then place them in a paper bag and fold over the top. Set this aside for 1-5 days, checking daily, then transfer the avocados to the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

You'll know your avocado is ripe when it begins to darken, gives to gentle pressure, and the stem spot pops off easily. Avocados are too ripe when they become hollow feeling, soft, and the flesh is dark and stringy.

What to serve with avocado crema

  • Crispy Baked Black Bean Tacos
  • Easy Cheese Enchiladas
  • Vegetarian Enchiladas with Butternut Squash
  • Meatless Stacked Enchilada Casserole
  • Vegetarian Burrito Bowl
  • Crispy Quinoa Bake

How to store avocado crema

Leftovers can be kept covered in an air tight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. If you have trouble with the avocado browning, press a piece of plastic wrap against the top of the crema before covering with an air tight lid. I do not recommend freezing any kind of crema.

Tips for customizing avocado crema

  • Swap the garlic powder for 1 clove of fresh garlic, pressed
  • Instead of yogurt, try sour cream or store bought Mexican crema
  • Add ¼ cup fresh cilantro
  • Thin the crema out with water if desired
  • Make vegan avocado crema by swapping the Greek yogurt for plain vegan yogurt

FAQ

What is crema?

Crema (Spanish for "cream") is a Mexican condiment made from heavy cream and buttermilk. It is sometimes called crema espesa or crema fresca.

Real Mexican crema is similar to thin sour cream or crème fraîche. This recipe uses Greek yogurt, which can be easily swapped with Mexican crema for a more authentic experience.

How many avocados do I need to make avocado crema?

I recommend ripening four avocados to make this avocado crema recipe, even though you'll only need two. It can be hard to know how an avocado will ripen, and you may need backups in case one or two don't come out perfectly ripe.
