Cocktails are great, but how about mocktails?

Mocktails are tricky because you want them to feel special without being too much work to make them worth it. Maybe you're sober, pregnant, cutting calories, or any of the many other reasons you might want to choose a non-alcoholic drink than an alcoholic one.

The best watermelon mocktail recipe

Not only is this drink refreshing and sweet, but it's also really good for you! Watermelon boasts all kinds of benefits.

Watermelon is a good source of Vitamins A, C, and B6 as well as magnesium and potassium. I have personally found it helpful with heartburn and indigestion.

It's highly hydrating properties make it the ideal pregnancy and nursing beverage when you're craving something other than plain water, which is great because these are times you might be reaching for a mocktail anyways.

This drink is so easy and rivals any cocktail I've ever had. I think it is plenty sweet on it's own, but if you prefer things sweeter or if you're adding alcohol to the mix, you may want to add a little sugar or honey to the juice mixture.

Ingredients

  • Watermelon
  • Limes
  • Mint leaves
  • Club soda

How to make a watermelon lime mocktail

  1. Cut the watermelon in half and use a spoon to scoop the flesh out into a blender or food processor. Work in batches as necessary so as not to overfill your appliance. Process the watermelon until smooth, then transfer to a clean kitchen towel.
  2. Squeeze the juice through the towel into a large pitcher and repeat as necessary until you have the juice of the entire watermelon. Once you have all the watermelon juice, add the juice of the two limes and stir.
  3. To assemble the mocktails, fill a glass with ice. Pour watermelon juice about one third of the way up the glass. Take a few mint leaves in your hand and give it a good slap with your other hand to release the aroma. Add the mint leaves to the glass and top with club soda.

Top tips

How to juice a watermelon

There are many ways to juice a watermelon, it just depends on what kind of appliances you have. A juicer (affiliate link) would be the easiest option, but a blender or food processor make quick work of it also.

If you don't have any of these you could use a muddler or potato masher to press the juice out of the watermelon. Be sure to work in batches as needed to avoid overflowing your appliance, pitcher, or bowl.

If you aren't using a juicer, you'll need to separate the juice from the pulp. I do this by placing the blended watermelon in a clean tea towel, folding it into a bundle with the loose ends at the top, and twisting and squeezing over a pitcher to remove and catch the juice.

This should also be done in batches as needed. Be aware that this may stain your towel, so keep one dedicated to this purpose or use an old one you don't care about. You could also use a fine mesh sieve to strain, but this can be difficult to clean.

How to prepare mint for garnish

Mint smells lovely after picking or straight out of the package, but you can bring out even more flavor by preparing your mint before using it as a garnish. To do this, hold the mint in your hand and slap it with the other hand once or twice to release the oils.

How to store

This mocktail will keep covered in a pitcher in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. I recommend just storing the juice and adding the club soda and mint right before serving. Also, if the juice has been sitting in the refrigerator for a while, stir before pouring.

Tips for customizing watermelon lime mocktails

  • If you prefer you can add 1-2 ounces of vodka or white rum
  • For a slushy version, freeze watermelon in small cubes before blending and skip the straining
  • Swap the club soda for flavored seltzer, lemon lime soda, or kombucha
  • Add a tiny bit of apple cider vinegar for extra health benefits and a little tanginess similar to a real cocktail

FAQ

What is a mocktail?

A mocktail is a refreshing and fun beverage that contains no alcohol. Sometimes mocktails will contain non-alcoholic spirits, but this one is a combination of juices and other simple ingredients.

How big of a watermelon should I use for watermelon mocktails?

I would recommend a medium sized watermelon for this recipe. You don't need to worry too much about it, just juice what you have, taste, and adjust as needed.

Why does my mocktail look separated after sitting a while?

If you're storing your pitcher of mocktails in the refrigerator overnight, you may notice some separation. This is because watermelon contains so much water. There is nothing to be concerned about, simply stir and enjoy!

Watermelon and lime are the perfect combination for summer sipping, with or without the added liquor, but I really love the addition of mint, Lindsay. So refreshing!

This is slightly misleading, as you have implied mocktail and yet you put alcohol into it.
