Are you familiar with Galentine's Day?

February 13th (also known as Galentine's Day) is a day to celebrate female friendship. It started hilariously on the show Parks and Recreation, when Leslie Knope threw a celebration for her gal pals.

There were thoughtful, handmade gifts, plenty of compliments, and of course, lots of food and drinks. As Leslie would say, "Ladies celebrating ladies. It's like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas!"

When trying to decide what to make for a ladies only party, my mind immediately went to a fruity cocktail. And let me tell you, this rum punch is fruity, fun, and goes down (dangerously) smooth.

Remember to drink responsibly and stick with your girlfriends!

I've included two recipes here. One makes twenty four servings (which I would say is enough for 8-12 actual people) and the other is for a single serving. This way you can recreate it for a solo night at home.

Three glasses of rum punch and a cutting board with slices of citrus fruit.

Ingredients

  • Dark spiced rum
  • Orange juice
  • Pineapple Juice
  • Lime juice
  • Grenadine
  • Angostura bitters
  • Orange and lime wedges, optional

How to make rum punch cocktail

  1. Fill a tall glass with 3 or 4 ice cubes. Add rum, juices, grenadine, and bitters. Stir together with a straw and garnish with orange and lime wedges if desired.
  2. If making this for a crowd, combine all ingredients in a large pitcher (affiliate link) or punch bowl. Stir to combine and refrigerate until ready to use, then serve over ice.

Top Tips

The best rum for cocktails

You can choose any rum that's available to you, but I recommend using good-quality dark spiced rum, like Sailor Jerry or Kraken.

How to serve rum punch cocktail

Rum punch is typically served in a high-ball or hurricane glass. If you're making it for a crowd, serve it in a punch bowl or large pitcher.

How to make an ice ring

If serving your punch in a punch bowl, an ice ring can help keep it cool without watering it down too quickly. You can easily make one by freezing water in a bundt pan. Consider adding citrus slices or edible flowers to give it a pretty look!

How to store

Leftover punch can be kept covered in the refrigerator for about 3 days. I seriously doubt there will be any leftovers though!

Tips for customization

  • Add a splash of club soda or seltzer water
  • Make it a mocktail by leaving out the rum and adding ginger ale or citrus soda instead
  • Garnish with fresh mint or maraschino cherries
  • Leave out the bitters for a sweeter drink
  • Try other fruit juices such as passion fruit or mango

FAQ

What is rum punch?

Rum punch is a cocktail that consists of rum, citrus, and sugar. It's believed to have originated in England, but eventually made its way to the Caribbean where it took on a more tropical flavor due to the locally available produce. This recipe is very similar to Planter's Punch, another fruity rum-based drink.

How long does rum punch last?

This recipe can be made 24 hours in advance, however, do not add any fresh fruit garnishes or ice until just before serving.

What is grenadine?

Grenadine is a red non-alcoholic syrup made from pomegranate juice. It has a sweet, slightly tart flavor, and is commonly used in cocktails and mocktails.

I love the colors in these Lindsay! The photos here are gorgeous. Pretty much a brightly colored drink with a piece of fruit hanging off the side is the only kind of cocktail I like. 🙂 I am so glad you could join the party today. Wish we could share a few rounds of this drink together!

This is so beautiful, Lindsay! I'm so glad I've found your blog through our Galantine's Day party! You are right that most men do NOT enjoy fruity drinks. I have a sangria party every summer, and all the men might have one glass (so they don't hurt my feelings?) and then switch to beer. Oh well, more fruity alcohol for the ladies. It never seems to be a problem 😉

Brunch is just an excuse to drink before noon. 🙂 I love your rum punch, love that the only sweetener is just juice and that you use dark rum (my favorite)! Going on my list for sure!

Rum is one of my fave alcohols (I always have it at home) and you're right, a cocktail is perfect for parties (even parties of one). Your photos are fabulous. I'm feeling awfully thirsty right now! Happy Galentine's Day, Lindsay!
