Alcohol might be on its way out.

Mocktails are all the rage right now, and with the rise of spirits like Seedlip and bars devoted solely to drinks with no alcohol, you might be looking for some alcohol free fun at home. This virgin piña colada recipe is a real treat, and all you need is a few simple ingredients and a good blender.

Piña coladas are known for their tropical flavor and refreshingly icy blended texture. They typically contain rum, but in this case we're making a non alcoholic version that rivals any other you may have had.

The pineapple and cream of coconut (NOT coconut cream!) make this beverage nice and sweet, while the lime juice adds a little bit of balance, giving it more of a classic cocktail feel. The best part is that its naturally vegan, gluten free, and dairy free!

Looking to make this for a crowd? Simply use the slider in the recipe card below to increase the serving size enough to fill a pitcher. You may need to work in batches so you don't overfill your blender.

Ingredients

  • Frozen pineapple chunks
  • Ice
  • Pineapple juice
  • Coco Real cream of coconut
  • Lime juice
Ingredients used to make a virgin pina colada.

How to make a piña colada mocktail

  1. Place all ingredients into a high powered blender and blend until smooth and creamy.
  2. Pour into 2 glasses and garnish with pineapple wedges, pineapple leaves, and cocktail umbrellas if desired.

Top tips

Use high quality pineapple

When choosing frozen fruit, it may be tempting to grab the cheapest option. However, with an ingredients list this small, the quality of ingredients can make a big difference.

I like Dole golden pineapple because it is ripe and sweet, but any high quality frozen pineapple will do, including any you have frozen yourself. If freezing your own pineapple, allow it to freeze for at least 4 hours before blending.

Cream of coconut

Make sure you're using cream of coconut, not coconut cream in your virgin piña colada. While it wouldn't be inedible, it definitely wouldn't be as good.

This is not a sponsored ad, I just tried a few different brands of cream of coconut and none came close to being as good as Coco Real. Some retailers have been having a hard time getting their hands on it lately, but my local Woodmans had a bunch of them, so if this is a problem for you just try calling around or ordering online.

The best blender for blended drinks

Any blender should get the job done, but I love my Vitamix for making quick work of frozen fruits and ice cubes. It is powerful and easy to clean. You could also use a food processor, but may need to work in smaller batches.

How to store

This blended piña colada mocktail is best enjoyed immediately, but if you prefer you can transfer it to a freezer safe container and freeze for up to 3 months. You will need to blend it again before drinking. This will be easier if you freeze it in smaller portions such as an ice cube tray.

Tips for customizing a piña colada mocktail

  • Top with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry
  • Swap the Coco Real for Coco Lopez cream of coconut, or other canned cream of coconut
  • Add 3 ounces light rum to make it an alcoholic cocktail
  • Swap the cream of coconut for a combination of unsweetened coconut cream and maple syrup
  • Omit the lime juice or swap it for zero proof rum alternative
