Say hello to everyone's favorite party dip.

This taco dip recipe is a must have at my house around the holidays. It's easy, flavorful, and oh so fun to eat after you've had a little bit to drink.

I'm not a mayonnaise fan, so you probably won't find me putting mayonnaise in any of my recipes. While my mom would probably swear by a good dollop of mayo here, I'm proud to announce that this is mayo free taco dip! Instead we're using cream cheese and sour cream to make the creamiest dip base.

Ingredients

  • Sour cream
  • Cream cheese
  • Taco seasoning
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Cheese
Ingredients used to make taco dip.

How do you make taco dip?

  1. Place sour cream and cream cheese in a bowl or stand mixer and mix to combine.
  2. Add the taco seasoning and mix until incorporated.
  3. Spread the mixture on a large plate or small platter.
  4. Top with shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, and shredded cheese.

Top tips

Soften the cream cheese

Cream cheese is easier to mix when it is closer to room temperature, so let it sit out for a 15-60 minutes before using it.

Chop your veggies small

When you chop your lettuce and tomato, keep them small so they'll be easy to scoop with your chips.

How to make homemade taco seasoning

It's totally fine to save time by purchasing a packet of taco seasoning at the store. For the best flavor though, I recommend using my healthy taco seasoning.

You'll need chili powder, smoked paprika, ground cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, black pepper, and salt.

How to store

Keep leftovers covered tightly with plastic wrap in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. I do not recommend freezing taco dip.

Tips for customizing taco dip

  • Add more or less taco seasoning to suit your taste
  • Add sliced black olives to the toppings
  • Add sliced jalapenos to the toppings
  • Use an equal amount of mayo instead of sour cream
  • Use as a topping for baked tacos for a real treat of a meal

FAQ

Can I use light sour cream and cream cheese?

Yes, feel free to lower the fat content of this dip by using light sour cream and/or cream cheese. The result will taste slightly less thick and rich. You could also swap the cream cheese for an equal amount of neufchâtel cheese.

What makes this the best taco dip?

I like to use simple ingredients. Cream cheese, sour cream, taco seasoning (you could use a packaged seasoning if homemade taco seasoning isn't your style), lettuce, tomato, and cheese. That's it! It's kind of magical and maybe a little Midwestern.

Is this like seven layer dip?

Some people might think a taco dip recipe should have seven or more layers of beans, guacamole, and whatnot, but this is the very basic, always awesome cold version that can be found in any grocery store near my house. The great thing is that it's so easy to make that I really never have to buy it pre-made.

This taco dip is so popular with my family and friends gatherings. In addition to the standard ingredients I add green onions and fresh chopped cilantro. Gives nice mild onion flavor and brightness from the cilantro.

Hi there! Do you think we could substitute Greek yogurt for the cream cheese or sour cream?

Absolutely! I would recommend swapping it for the sour cream since they have a similar consistency.

It's more like a 9x9, I usually just use a dinner plate or platter.
